Banners are the most popular form of internet advertising. They are the familiar graphic interfaces that lead on to another internet page also known as a landing page.

You are free to use banners of any size on your website but there are international regulatory standards updated annually by the IAB (International Advertising Bureau). We recommend that you use banners of standard sizes because that way you will not need to resize them every time you want to place them in another site or in case other system administrators would like to use your site for their banners. Lately banners of sizes 728/90 and 300/250 pixels are by far the most popular.

There are static banners too, but active ones that trigger video or animation attract more clicks. Unless you absolutely must have it, we do not recommend that you add sound to your banners as unexpected noise can surprise an important visitor to your site who happens to click on a banner at the wrong time – as his/her children are falling asleep or at an academic conference, for example. The main goal of banners is to attract attention and trigger a reaction. That is why there so many varieties out there – floating ones, rich media ones, pop-up windows, combinations of banners with online games etc.

When you are organizing an internet banner campaign you will most likely be charged in one of three ways: for the number of showings (impressions) of the advertisement, for the duration of exposure (say, a month),or for every click leading visitors to your site (Pay-per-click).

You can maximize the effect of banner advertising on your business if you employ on of three tried-and-tested techniques:

1. Invite the visitor to do what you want them to do: ‘Buy’, ‘Subscribe’, ‘Click’, ‘Register’, ‘Call’ etc.
2. Add an element of urgency: ‘This offer is only valid until…’, ‘Today only…’
3. Stimulate: ‘Free gift’, ‘30% discount’ etc.
